Pest Control – The Right Plan Makes All the Difference

By Terry Mavan

Welcome!  The goal of our website is to provide you with information and tips on pest control.

Mosquitoes, ants ,roaches, termites, bed bugs, fleas, rodents – no matter what kind of critter has invaded your home, the right pest control plan is a must. Otherwise, you will wind up with insects and rodents that will bite you, steal your food, rummage through your garbage, set up shop in your bed, and even eat your home right out from under you!

But pests aren’t just a nuisance; some of them can be downright dangerous. They can leave you itchy or suffering from allergic reactions. Because many of them carry diseases, pests can even lead to more serious problems for you and your pets – like severe illnesses, or worse.

The sooner you come up with a pest control solution, the better off you will be.

Pest problems don’t go away on their own. Instead, they get worse – as more eggs start to hatch and more critters get added to the colony.

Making things worse?

You won’t always see the pests that are turning your dream home into a nightmare. That’s because pests don’t play fair. Instead of seeing them casually strolling through your kitchen or living room, they are lurking behind your stairs, deep inside your closet, behind your baseboards, and even inside your walls!

Pest ControlWhen it comes to pest control, there is no better plan than prevention.

Did you know that you may, unknowingly, be enticing pests into your home? Things that you don’t give a second thought to – like those crumbs on the counter, that tiny puddle under your bathroom sink, or last night’s garbage – are considered an invitation by insects and rodents.

So, what can you do to make your home less pest friendly?

- Get rid of anything that a pest might consider to be food

That clutter you keep saying you’re going to get rid of can look like a Sunday brunch for rats and mice. Even a couple of granules of sugar can be heavenly to an ant. If you have anything in or around your home that might be used as pest food, either get rid of it, or seal it up in tight containers – where pests won’t be able to smell it and be attracted to it.

- Get rid of anything that may quench a pest’s thirst

A half-empty can of soda that’s just sitting around can seem like a gift from God to an ant or a roach. Even a tiny bit of standing water can be a dream come true for a thirsty insect or rodent that’s had a long day.

- Get rid of anything that might be used as shelter

That pile of wood that’s sitting in your backyard can be turned into a condo by mice and roaches. That leaky faucet in your bathroom is like a beach house to a mosquito. Those tiny cracks in your baseboards are like a townhome to fleas and termites. Those overgrown bushes that are pressing up against your bedroom window are a perfect place for rats to call home.

It may take some handy work, some yard work, or some organization on your part to get rid of things that pests feel comfortable living in.

- Get rid of anything that pests can use to gain access to your home

Take a look at your exterior doors – like your front door, your garage door, or any other door that leads to the outside. If you can see even a little bit of sunshine peeking through underneath, it means that pests have an easy way to get into your home.

The more comfortable a pest is in your home, the tougher it will be to get rid of it. You have to do everything you can to keep pests from thinking of your home as their own personal bed and breakfast, where they can “check in” as they please!

What types of pests can you find around your home?

While insects and rodents can pop up just about anywhere, certain pests tend to gravitate towards certain areas:

- In your kitchen, you are likely to find cockroaches that are looking for leftovers, ants looking for sugar, or mice and rats that are looking for old garbage and a snack.

- In your bathroom, you are likely to find mosquitoes that live and mate in standing water or roaches that are looking for a humid, warm place that reminds them of the tropics – where most roach species originated from.

- In your bedroom, you can find bed bugs that are just waiting for you to fall asleep so that they can have a feast or fleas that love dining on you and your pets – especially when they get to do it in a warm, cozy bed.

So, how do you get rid of them?

The type of pest control plan that you come up with has to be specific to the pest you’re battling. You can’t, for example, use the same pest control products on mice that you would on termites.

That being said, though, you don’t always need to reach for the dangerous poison to get it done.

Pest ControlWhile it may be the most common pest control tool, poisons – like foggers, baits, and sprays – don’ have to be your only source of pest control. There are plenty of other, safer tools that you should have in your arsenal – that you can either use alone or in conjunction with a small amount of poison.
