Rodent control really should be a top priority in your home if you want to avoid what could be a really nasty situation. Your home faces a lot of potential infestations from all kinds of pests. And while most insect infestations are hassles you just don’t want to deal with, most of the time they are just that – an annoying hassle. Rodents, on the other hand, do a lot more than just pester you – they can also damage property, contaminate your food, and spread disease.

But there are 6 specific things you can do to make sure that rodents don’t wreak havoc in your home:

1. Keep your property clutter-free

This needs to be a rule for both the inside and outside of your home. Don’t leave piles of lumber or debris around your place. Make sure things aren’t piling up under your porch or in your garage. Keep your lawn trimmed. Don’t create clutter inside the house.

Rodents like places to hide, so don’t give them any places to do it!

2. Don’t feed rodents

A major part of rodent control involves making it tough for them to survive. Limiting the amount of food they can scavenge is a great start. Cereal, cookies, and even pet food should be kept in sealed food containers. Garbage cans should have tight lids. Spills should be wiped up and floors swept.

If you make it hard for them to find food, they’ll have no choice but to go somewhere else!

3. Limit access to water

This is a rodent control technique that makes them the most uncomfortable. Check your pipes to make sure there are no leaks. If you have any standing water, clean it up. Promptly wipe up any spills inside. Make sure all of your sinks are drained and cleaned. Don’t leave liquids out overnight.

4. Use rodent control products as a deterrent

Making sure rodents don’t feel welcome at your house is a great place to start, but you can take a few extra precautions, too, with some specific products.

Try electronic rodent control. You won’t hear the annoying high-frequency sound waves, but rodents will. Electronic rodent control devices will not penetrate through walls, though, so you will have to place several of them around the house for total rodent control.

5. Trap rodents

Even if you only have a couple of rodents, start trapping them now. The more time you waste the worse your rodent problem could get. Some traps will kill rodents, others will keep them alive – so the choice is up to you.

Try glue traps if you want to catch a pesky rodent inside the house. Try peanut butter, bits of fruit, or candy as bait. Place the traps along the wall where you know rodents travel. Rodents are creatures of habit. They’ll usually take the same route over and over to get to their shelter, food and water supplies.

6. Try poison bait for rodent control

Be careful, though. You don’t want to use poisoned baits around pets and kids. And, if you use poisoned baits inside the house, you run the risk of rodents dying in places you can’t get to easily – like inside your walls and behind your cabinets. Before you know it, you could have a stinky mess on your hands! Using poison really should be a last resort.

The main goal of rodent control is to make these critters feel as unwelcome as possible. They’re looking for three things–shelter, food, and water. By not taking advantage of these tips, you could unknowingly be rolling out the red carpet for them!

Understanding the preventative measures you should take – and knowing what rodent control options you have – will significantly reduce your chances of finding rodents around your home!
